Bruce

Things couldn’t really be going any better for me in Dallas. Not only is the energy becoming more relaxed as time goes on, but I’ve also really connected with Jennifer’s dad. We have had deep conversations that make me envious of lacking this kind of bond with my own father.

David has been open to getting to know me as a person, and I am truly grateful that he has given me the chance. Amanda is still warming up to me but I am definitely feeling more optimistic about the rapport I’m building with my in-laws.

As a part of our male bonding experience my father-in-law has been taking me along to the ranch, nearly every time he goes out. We head out in the red pickup truck as the rays from the sun beam down onto the lush greenery. The air feels fresher out here. Something about this type of life just feels so freeing.

It has me questioning if I should become a ranch owner like Creed. I didn’t really see the appeal before now but after having this incredible experience firsthand I’m starting to envision additions to my future that I hadn’t previously considered.

“I’m relieved to know that you have a genuine interest in horses.” David shifts the gear into park then exits the driver’s side of the truck. “You would have no chance in hell otherwise.”

I chuckle heartily, appreciating that he is no longer the man who was glaring me down at first sight. “A man must be well-rounded.”

“You’re damn right.” David leads me into the stables, where I greet each of the five horses. He notices that I am particularly attached to their black stallion. This one caught my eye from the first time that I saw him. “That’s a good sign. Midnight is the best judge of character.”

I accept a brush from him then gently use it on Midnight’s smooth coat. “We have that in common then.”

“Now, that doesn’t mean that he can’t switch up at any time.” David uses his brush on the brown horse to my left. “I’m sure you know that horses have strong personalities just like us and Midnight is certainly the most stubborn out of the bunch.”

“You continue to describe me as a horse.” I pause from my task to give him a charming smile.

“Perhaps that’s why you’re drawn to each other. Were you ever taught how to properly saddle a horse?” He looks over at me with a curious expression.

I know a good deal about horses from growing up in Kansas and looking after Creed’s ranch at times. Still, I feel like David wants to teach me something. I’m not going to pass up on this opportunity to bond even further with David.

I shake my head innocently, allowing myself to become his student. He grabs some riding equipment then we lead Midnight out into the open field. I am attentive throughout the entire lesson, making inquiries throughout to affirm that he has my undivided attention.

David smirks towards the end of the demonstration at the most uncomfortable part of the process for Midnight.
